A digital privacy class action lawsuit accusing the University of Maryland Medical System Corp. of embedding software on its websites that shared patients’ private health information with entities like Facebook and Google will be removed from district court and remanded as a state-court matter, a federal judge has ruled.
The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, individually and on behalf of others similarly situated, brought a class action complaint against The University of Maryland Medical System Corp. (UMMS) for allegedly disclosing information about its patients—including their medical treatments, the hospitals they visited, and their identities—to entities like Facebook and Google by tracking pixels on the companies’ websites and health portals.
